The second annual Bridge Brewing Growler Run took place with more athletes than ever caving to the temptations of self-inflicted pain. A 10km run while carrying two full growlers (1.89l) is no easy feat but still the eccentric, beer drinking run-fanatics took to the streets of North Vancouver in the 2014 event. To add insult to injury the 10km run was clocked by an unreliable strava recording at just over 11km. I guess this is a run 10 get 1 free type situation.
Beyond pure bragging rights the top runners from each category were rewarded for their efforts with free beer for a month. The top two finishers from each and every category will become Bridge Brewing VIP members for the next four weeks where two growler fills will be on the house.
The participants in this unique event come from one of two passions – running or beer. The first finisher definitely came from the running category with a finishing time of just over 40 minutes. Perhaps the next month of beer drinking will work to slow down this excessive pace. The rest of us trickled in over the next hour and were rewarded with a pint at the finish line. Never has a North Shore Pale Ale tasted so refreshing at 10AM!
In addition to the cold beverage waiting at the finish line local sponsors stepped up their game donating time, prizes and man power making this event possible. A big shout out from all the participants goes to Forerunners, Steed Cycles, Brooks, Famoso Pizza and Deep Cove Outdoors. Without these amazing sponsors this somewhat ridiculous event could not have happened.
If your ears perked up from the words running or beer then mark your calendar as the run will surely take place again in 2015 and that could be your chance to earn your beer for the month! The event is a truly social competition and is a ton of fun. Fill up those growlers now and start training for next year!
