Yellow Dog Brewery – Blended Reality Sour White Ale w/ Peaches Review
Port Moody’s Yellow Dog Brewery has let their brewer off the leash in creating the Blended Reality. This barrel aged beer is a sour white ale that has bee aged with peaches to create a unique blend of trending styles. To the average craft beer nerd, taking a fruit beer, souring it and then aging in oak is enough alone to cause a brain hemorrhage. To see if it lives up to the hype is as simple as pouring a pint.
This beer pours a cloudy orange-gold colour with strong effervescence. The bubbles erupt in the glass but settle quickly and without a trace left on the sides of the glass. The nose is funky with a distinct wild yeast character along side a mellow sweetness and peach stone fruit character. The flavour isn’t as funky as the smell, a light body and high carbonation gives a light texture on the tongue. A sharp acidity hits the sides of the cheeks while a peach sweetness and oak warmth linger. Despite the peach being fermented, there is still a distinct sweetness to the beer aiding in the peach flavour coming through.
The Blended Reality is a pleasant and relatively easy drinking beer for being a barrel aged sour. Some may long for a bit more body and kick, but at 5% alcohol you can enjoy this one and not be too worried about it sneaking up on you and catching your inhibitions by surprise.
