Big Rock Brewery – Hopopotamus Oak Aged IPA Review
Big Rock’s Vancouver Brewery has brewed an IPA and aged it in oak for a unique flavour infusion in a hop-forward beer. From the 650ml bottle the Hopopotamus pours a hazy amber colour with nearly three fingers of lacing head. The aroma is creamy and hop forward with a northwest hop character that takes charge. There is little to no oak character on the nose. Tasting the beer the oak is subtle but comes into play. Up front is the IPA hop tones with a blend of pine, citrus and mellow tropical fruit. This leads into the oak character that gives a woody-earthy tone along side a touch of oxidation. The Hopopotamus is a lightly oaked IPA giving a mellow but apparent oak twist on the IPA style.
