Fernie Brewing Co. – Old Stumpy Pine IPA Review
In Fernie Brewing’s IPA series of limited release beers is the Old Stumpy, an IPA that is brewed using pine tips in the recipe. Pouring this beer from the 650ml bottle it is golden in colour with a small amount of hop-haze showing in the beer. topped with a finger and a half of lacing head the Old Stumpy has a true west coast aroma of citrus, pine and grapefruit. Despite being a “Pine IPA” there is actually no reference to Pine on the ingredients list so this could just be a hop character. Tasting the beer the pine notes come through with some strength along side grapefruit tones. The bitterness is quite strong but balanced by the aromatics and mid-bodied 6.7% alcohol. This is not an overly extreme beer or drastically different from other BC IPAs but it is well balanced, has great flavour and is a very well crafted beer.
Alcohol – 6.7%
Size – 650ml bottle
