Driftwood Brewery – 2017 Belle Royal Kriek Review
The 2017 version of the Belle Royal sees a label update to go with this renowned liquid. Driftwood has aligned the look with their updated branding and with it comes a slight shift in the flavour. The beer pours dark and cherry-like in colour with a finger or so of head which settles quickly. The aroma is tart with an astringent and yeasty sour character. The cherry gives a mild sweetness and fruit character behind the sour mask. Tasting the beer it too is quite sour but has more balance than the nose forecast. A big body, wood character and dried cherry character gives depth and a light sweetness to the beer. This is a big beer that is very intense and strong. It will excite the beer geek but may turn off those new to sour beers. Brace yourself, you’re in for a ride.
