Category 12 Brewing – Anomaly Bourbon Barrel Aged Belgian Ale Review
From Category 12 Brewing comes a beer in their Barrel Holder line of beers called the Anomaly. This Bourbon Barrel Aged Belgian Ale is 8.7% alcohol and the IBUs are labelled as being “?”. Pouring this wax dipped beer it is dark burgundy-brown in colour and has nearly three fingers of dense and lacing head on top. The aroma is a touch boozy with bourbon notes joining a subtle Belgian Quad-like aroma. A sliver of dried fruit is joined but the bourbon-oak character for a strong and intense smelling beer. Tasting the beer, it too is very intense. The bourbon flavour takes charge with a boozy, oak character which leads into subtle Belgian-yeast character and notes of plum and cherry. The flavour tastes stronger than the 8.7% alcohol but if you are a fan of boozy beers then this one has a wallop of flavour that comes with it.
