Spinnakers Brewery – 32nd Anniversary Tequila Barrel Aged Sour Quince Saison Review
The name is a bit of a mouthful but there is a lot going on here. For Spinnakers’ 32nd anniversary they have brewed a Sour Quince Saison and aged it in Tequila Barrels. Sold in bomber style bottles this beer pours as a cloudy, golden-straw colour and has a very thin finger of quick to settle head atop it. The aroma is unique with the tequila adding a sharpness to the beer and the oak, a vanilla like, earthy smoothness. A yeasty character also comes through on the nose with a citrus and fruity sourness. Overall the aroma is still somehow light and fresh but there is a lot going on. Taking a sip, the body is light and the sour tones are sharp but balanced. A somewhat juice like character brings notes of melon, grapefruit and apple while the tequila barrels give the back of the mouth an earthy and deep character. This is not your typical sour but when you have been brewing for 32 years you have to step outside the box from time to time. This beer is light and refreshing but unique with a nice depth to its flavour.
