Red Collar Brewing has released a big, bad wheat ale that they are calling a Black Hefe Dunkelweizen. From the bomber bottle this beer pours a colour of dark brown. Letting nearly no light through at all the beer is topped with two fingers of lacing head and smells of wheat, chocolate, banana and clove. On the palate the beer is mid-bodied while it is a Dunkelweizen it shows some flavour characteristics of a traditional Hefeweizen. The notes of banana and clove are there but a roasty, dark chocolate flavour comes in for a big and dry-bitter finish. For being 7.1% the alcohol is quite masked but the flavour is full-on. The Red Collar Team was right to call this a Black Hefe Dunkelweisen as it is not a typical Dunkelweizen. It is darker, bigger and offers a unique flavour twist on a fall-flavoured beer. Give it a try for yourself and let us know what your take is on this Kamloops brewed beer.
