Saturday March 5th was the second day of Victoria Beer Week 2016, and one of the main events for the day was the home brewing workshop hosted by Michael Kuzyk.  Attendees were guided through the brewing process on Category 12’s small pilot batch system while Michael provided learning opportunities and hands-on experience with brewing beer.

Michael explained and demonstrated the process he goes through for his R&D batches – only on offer at the brewery – while providing insight into brewing at home or at any scale.

From equipment, to technique, to common problems encountered primarily by home brewers as well as those that all brewers experience, Michael gave attendees an intimate look into the brewing process and a closer understanding of Category 12’s own methods of creating great beer.

Saturday’s creation will go through the typical fermentation process of any of Michael’s pilot batches and will be served to patrons at the tasting room when ready.  Category 12 will announce the release of the beer through Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.

The workshop was also a way to introduce aspiring home brewers to BrewVic, the Victoria Home Brewer’s Club.  The group offers help and advice to home brewers of all experience levels, and members often meet up to share and discuss what they’ve brewed and what they are currently working on.

Affordable, interesting, engaging, and delicious (thanks to a free glass or sample flight), the home brew workshop is an excellent event that is sure to attract more participants next year and is highly recommended for both novice and experienced home brewers, and those who aspire to be.

It was loads of fun. Getting to learn directly from Michael as well as chat with other home brewers was great. Add to that some delicious pizza and a free C12 beer and you’ve got the makings of a stellar afternoon!
