The Big Rock Urban Brewery Opens In Vancouver’s Mt Pleasant
TheBig Rock Brewery is not a new story for beer drinkers. In 1984 founder Ed McNally took his thirst for quality beer into action and opened the Big Rock Brewing Company in Calgary Alberta. What is new is the increased focus on local and more specifically, BC craft beer drinkers. With a grand opening event held on April 9th, 2015 the Big Rock Urban Brewery joined the ranks of British Columbia craft breweries.
Located just outside of Vancouver’s Olympic Village, at the corner of West 4th and Alberta, not only can you now experience locally brewed Big Rock beer, but also the brewery-gallery that they call an urban eatery. Watch as brewmaster Jody Hammell brews your favourite beers in the brewery while you enjoy a delicious menu of food worthy of the beer list.
With the opening of a Vancouver based brewery, you will find that the range of Big Rock beers expanding and the taste of trucking a beer from Alberta beginning to dissipate. The plan from this new facility is to service all keg and bomber bottles of Big Rock beer from within British Columbia. If you are thirsting for a 6-pack of Grasshopper it will still bee an Alberta brew but your other options have never been as plentiful.
Big Rock Urban Brewery brings a unique approach to localized scale in brewing beer. The homestead Alberta brewery continues to pump out the brew while BC can now be catered locally. Next up is a production and brewpub style brewery opening in Ontario and surely it will not stop there. Big Rock is aiming at growth and they are simultaneously aiming to stay relevant to a local-inspired crowd. The beer has arrived in British Columbia and there is nothing to hide at the Big Rock Urban Brewery. A 2nd public offering helped to land this publicly traded company the resources to grow and time will tell the dividends that it pays.
Next time you are in the Mount Pleasant area swing on over to the Big Rock Urban Brewery and see what is in the kettle. The view is great from the restaurant and you will not likely be disappointed. Big Rock is in BC and they are here to stay!
