Dead Frog Brewery – 2015 Commander Imperial Stout Review
The Commander is back for another round of battle. The 2015 Commander Imperial Stout has returned from Dead Frog Brewery. This year to beer comes in at 10.5% and 65 IBUs and was aged for 60 dayes in whisky soaked white oak. From the bomber bottle the beer pours as a deep, very dark, chocolate brown colour topped with a thick fingers worth of lightly lacing head. A whisky infused scent hits the nose first with notes of oak, vanila, molassis and a kick of booze. The flavour is big and intense with dark, roasted malt tones up front while the whisky-oak flavours build up behind. As the flavour progresses a molassis, hop and lightly burnt bitterness clings to the back of the palate as a complex, big bodied and big flavoured beer. The 2015 Commander Imperial Stout is not the biggest available but still packs a formidable punch. Today it is quite drinkable but give it another 12 months in the cellar that this beer will likely be fantastic.
