There are a small handful of breweries in BC that can say they have been here since the beginning. Following shortly after The Horseshoe Bay Brewery and Spinnakers was Victoria’s Swan’s Brewpub which opened in 1989. This is a brewery, restaurant and hotel that has staked a claim in the creation of BC’s craft brewing history. Founded by BC craft beer legend Frank Appleton, the one and only Sean Hoyne was the first brewmaster to call Swan’s home.

Today the brewery is much the same as it was in 1989 but the flavours have evolved. Serving 9+ beers at any one time Swan’s has a contingent of loyal Victoria beer drinkers that call the brewpub somewhat of a home. Brewmaster Andrew Tessier can hang his hat on staple beers such as the Appleton Brown Ale, Buckerfield’s ESB, Pandora Pale Ale, and a personal favourite, Riley’s Scotch Ale. Many of the recipes originated many years ago but slow evolution has molded these classic beers into a unique and competitive flavour to rival the best of BC craft beer.

With only a few other brewery/hotels locations in BC, Swans represents a unique craft beer experience where patrons can experience not only craft beer but also a delicious menu of food options plus a boutique hotel.

In a building constructed back in 1913 the Buckerfield’s company purchased the building in the 1950s. What started off as an animal feed store became a brewery in 1989 and what would become a 29 suite boutique hotel.

The spacious, high-roofed suites are a melding of tradition and luxury with both heritage and modern amenities. Best of all, located in the same building as the brewpub when the doors close downstairs at 2am, the comfort of a home-away-from-home is only a few steps away.
