Beer and school do not typically mix well. When it comes to the Eureka Beer Guide however, they come hand-in-hand. Ken Beattie is a Prud’homme Beer Certified beer sommelier, not to mention President of the BC Craft Brewers Guild who will take you on an adventure through the ages from the perspective of beer. Ken’s experience, knowledge and passion for craft beer make his education sessions truly remarkable.
During Victoria Beer Week, Beer Me BC had the opportunity to attend a History Of Beer class and take a walk through the ages of beer learning and tasting along the way.
The journey starts with a Sumerian poem about Ninkasi, the patron goddess of brewing. Here the first recorded beer recipe originated nearly 4000 years ago. Over the course of the following 90 minutes the class traveled through time and experienced the stories and beers that progressed us to where we are and what we enjoy today. For this lecture, the journey brought us through Egypt, England, Belgium and the Czech Republic before landing here in North America some four millenia later. Pharroahs an monks each savoured the nectar of brewing and the story led up to the start of craft brewing here in British Columbia.
This history lesson on beer tastes all the better with beers poured to experience the brewing methods and styles of the times. From Gruit to Pilsner, beer is rich with history and has been a key aspect of global society for longer than you may have thought. Here we are barely scratching the surface but the legacy behind is rich and fascinating.
It is time to be learned and experience the wealth of knowledge that Ken Beattie posesses. Through 90 minutes you will laugh, learn, and most importantly, enjoy craft beer along the way.
