Dageraad Brewing – De Witte Sour Fermented Witbier Review
Dageraad Brewing has released their first seasonal offering as a part of their Single Batch Series. This Belgian Style Witbier is brewed with Lactobacillus, giving the categorization of a Sour-Fermented Belgian-Style Spiced Wheat Ale. With that mouthful of a style label the beer pours from a bomber bottle a slightly cloudy, golden colour topped with a finger and a half of tightly packed head. As the head settles at a moderate pace an aroma os wheat, orange peel and a touch of coriander wafts through. The sour tones are not sharp like you may expect from the name but a slight sharpness add contrast to the mellow wheat notes on the nose. In the tasting the De Witte has a crisp start with a sourness that builds very quickly. The sharpness in this sour is not of a typical Witbier or a big sour ale but more along the lines of what you may find in a Berliner Weisse style. This sour aspect mellows rather quickly however making room for the wheat notes and a smidgen of coriander and orange near the finish. A slight sourness lingers but the flavour profile is rather polar with a big sour start and a nice, mellow Witbier to finish.
