Lighthouse Brewing Co. – Rhubie Rhubarb Ale Review
It is time to jump aboard the drinking seasonally train and open a bottle of the Rhubie, a spring seasonal from Victoria BC’s Lighthouse Brewing Co in the form of a Spring, Rhubarb Ale. This beer comes just as the Rhubarb harvest comes to term and pours from the slightly brewery a-typically labelled bottle a golden-straw colour with noticeable sediment floating in the beer. This is not a cloudy beer but the sediment is quite apparent. Topped with a single finger of head which settles rather quickly the beer smells wheat based and malt-forward with a citrus, mild sweetness to it. The rhubarb does not stand out like you may expect in the smell. The flavour is crisp with a light wheat flavour, solid malt and a touch of fruity sweetness. The slightest of sour tones comes into play but again placing this to Rhubarb is a bit of a stretch for the imagination. The Rhubie is an easy drinking, very enjoyable summer beer but may not be quite what you are expecting going into the tasting.
