Let the Beer Games Begin! – Vancouver Craft Beer Week Kicks Off In Style

2013_06_VCBW-189Vancouver Craft Beer Week is back for another year running from May 31 to June 8, 2013 with the top BC Craft Breweries in attendance the lot is “All In” making craft beer the biggest thing to hit Vancouver since Expo Ernie walked the streets. As the third annual event this is the time and place to introduce yourself to BC Craft Beer.

First on the long list of events coming in this week of Beer-Mania was the VCBW Opening Night Gala presented by the soon-to-open Craft Beer Market. Located in the Yaletown, Roundhouse Community Centre it was a battle between youth and experience as seven new BC breweries put their hard work head to head with the tried and true favorites of BC beer drinkers. The list as given by VCBW truly shows the youth and growth in the industry as even in the ‘Old Favorites’ list there are two breweries less than 24 months old.

This is the first opportunity for tasting what is just around the corner and soon to be released. The line of new breweries started off with Main Street and their signature pilsner. Crisp, refreshing and very smooth this beer will soon stand as the benchmark for future beers to come from this Vancouver based brewery.

2013_06_VCBW-455Next door to Main Street were the ‘Movers and Shakers’ from Deep Cove Brewery tasting their Wheat Beer, Powell Street with their porter, witbier and recent Canadian Brewing Awards winner Jalopy Pale Ale, and Bridge Brewing was just a step further serving their pale ale and kolsch options. One day before their grand opening, Delta’s Four Winds Brewing was tasting three delicious options next to Bomber Brewing and 33 Acres which are also set to open later this summer.

2013_06_VCBW-314Moving to the other side of the room breweries such as Central City, Driftwood, Lighthouse, Steamworks and Vancouver island each had an array of classic favorites and recent concoctions for tasting. Whether it is the infamous Driftwood Brewing Fat Tug IPA or the new Steamworks Frambozen you can always count on these BC Craft Brewers to deliver a delicious beer. Recent additions to the ‘Old Favorites’ category are Parallel 49 and Hoyne Brewing that were also tasting their beers that have gone down in recent history as some of the best available in BC.
