2012_01_BMBC_2_1-11Townsite Brewing Inc. has made quite the splash over the past year with some great tasting and award winning beers. As a winter seasonal this Powell River based brewery has released the Biere d’Hiver. A deep chestnut brown colour topped with two fingers of mocha coloured head the aroma is lighter that expected when it comes to winter ales. A sweetness comes through the smell with light caramelisation paired with a cherry/currant balancing the notes. The taste is not like many similarly categorized beers. Starting off a malt body comes into play that builds to include a defined sweetness. As the sugar builds on the palate it shifts to a lightly burnt caramel flavour that gives a bitter-sweet finish. The sweetness seems to overpower the other notes of plum and currant called out in the smell and on the label leaving a strong tasting beer that is quite enjoyable but you may want to share.

Yes, not quite what I was expecting but very enjoyable. A touch on the sweet side for my preferences though.
